What not to miss: Turner Contemporary summer programme highlights

Over the summer Turner Contemporary will be showing exhibitions and commissions by leading contemporary artists including Tracey Emin, Mark Wallinger, Lindsay Seers and John Smith. Visitors can also take part in our exciting public programme of free and paid for events including talks, late night openings, live music and performance as well as special café events new for summer 2012.

Watch Tracey Emin talking to Stephen Fry live from her home town of Margate, about growing up by the sea, her exhibition of new work exploring themes of love, sensuality and romanticism and her relationship to the Rodin and Turner drawings also on show.

Two Wounded Birds
Margate’s popular trio play in their hometown to celebrate the opening of She Lay Down Deep Beneath the Sea: Tracey Emin at Turner Contemporary.

Late Night Live
Late Night Live is Turner Contemporary’s monthly late opening event, on the last Friday of each month from 6pm-10pm. Late Night Live is the perfect opportunity to explore art after hours, relax with a drink and enjoy exhibitions, performances, music, talks and films all for free. Each month there is a different theme to the evening and a programme of events designed specifically for new audiences and people with a sense of adventure and fun.

Friday 13 July
Celebrate the start of the Margate Hosts the Boat festival with The Boat Project Crew, performances and talk from artist duo Lone Twin and more.

·         Draw
Friday 24 August
Artist duo boyleANDshaw curate a night of live art and music

·         Twist
Friday 14 September
A Brazilian inspired evening of dance and music, including a talk by exhibiting artist Maria Nepomuceno.

Margate Hosts the Boat
The Lone Twin boat makes its maiden voyage visit to Margate with four days of events taking place in Margate to celebrate (13-16 July). As part of the London 2012 Festival the 32-foot yacht fashioned from over 1,200 wooden objects donated by people from communities across the South East theboatproject.com
 
·         The Sailor Returns
Friday 13 July 6-10pm
The arrival of the yacht in Margate harbour and an evening of community based celebrations, with music, poetry and making on the harbour arm and including Turner Contemporary’s Late Night Live: Voyage.

·         The Exchanging of gifts
Saturday 14 July 2-11pm
The yacht is on display to the public on the Harbour Arm, visitors can meet and talk with crew members to learn more about the project. In the afternoon there will be a carnival procession, dance performance from Motionhouse and the free Ship’s Log Concert with specially commissioned music from Megan Henwood and The Boat Project’s travelling artist 30 Pounds of Bone.

·         The Feast
Sunday 15 July 10am-8pm
A day of play on the beach with troubadour performances and out-size paper boats and the farewell feast in the evening on the Harbour Arm.

·         The Departure
Monday 16 July 12 noon
The blessing and farewell to the boat and crew with live music taking place on the Harbour Arm.
 
Olympic Torch  
Thursday 19 July 11am-1pm (approx)
On its 8000 mile 70 day journey round the
UK, the Olympic Flame arrives in Cliftonville and Margate.

Artist John Smith talks about his new video Horizon, shot for the Defining Gravity project with Turner Contemporary and Dog Kennel Hill Project with Film Curator Stuart Comer.

·         Panel discussion: She Lay Down
Saturday 30 June
Three leading experts discuss the erotic as subject matter, in relation to the work of Emin, Turner and Rodin currently on show at Turner Contemporary. Chaired by Rodin specialist; curator, lecturer and writer Catherine Lampert.

Saturday 7 July
University for the Creative Arts Vice-Chancellor Simon Oldfield-Kerr chairs a discussion with exhibiting artists Lindsay Seers and Mark Wallinger about their new commissions for Turner Contemporary.

·         Maria Nepomuceno
Friday 14 September
At the launch night of her new commission for Turner Contemporary Breathing Time, Maria Nepomuceno talks about the incorporation of Brazilian indigenous techniques in her sculptural installations.
