More households to benefit from improved waste collections

More than 4,000 properties in Thanet are set to benefit from improved waste and 
recycling collections.   

Seagull proof bags and waste containment bins will be delivered to those 
properties in Thanet that currently dont have any form of waste containment and 
are on a weekly black rubbish sack collection.  

As black rubbish sacks can be exposed to attack from seagulls, the seagull proof 
bags are designed to protect the black rubbish sacks inside as they have a lid 
on top. The waste must not be put in loose but contained in black rubbish sacks 
that are tied up.  

These were first trialled in Ramsgate in 2010 and are only given to properties 
that cannot accommodate wheeled bins. The waste containment bins will be 
delivered to some shared properties, such as flats, and other properties that 
cant accommodate dual wheeled bins, which will be collected weekly. 

A few properties that don't currently have dual-wheeled bins, but can 
accommodate them will receive these during this next phase. 

Residents will receive a letter from Monday 13 February to let them know that 
they will receive either a seagull proof bag, waste containment bin or dual 
wheeled bins, and when they will be delivered.  

Cllr. Alan Poole, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said: This next 
phase of providing improved waste and recycling collections will benefit more 
than 4,000 households across Thanet. 

By providing these improved facilities, households will be able to ensure their 
waste is protected from attack from seagulls, which creates extra cleaning and 
can look very unsightly. 

Our wheeled bin collections have proved very popular with residents and we hope 
that by providing the seagull proof bags and waste containment bins, we are 
helping people who cannot accommodate a dual wheeled bin, to keep their rubbish 
safe from seagull attack. 

As keeping Thanets streets clean is a key priority for residents, we hope this 
will help many more households and help us to keep Thanet tidy.

Across Thanet, more than 51,000 homes are already on the councils dual wheeled 
bin collection, with waste that cannot be recycled collected one week from the 
black lidded bin, while recyclable items, such as plastic bottles, tins, cans, 
paper and cardboard, are collected the following week from the blue lidded bin.
